Item Code: 740-480

This original, wooden cased marine sextant is a version likely carried and used aboard WW2 Imperial Japanese Navy ships. The double reflection instrument used to measure the angle between any two visible objects. The name ‘sextant’ comes from the extent of its limb that is the sixth part of a circle. The main use of a sextant is to determine the angle between a celestial object and the base horizon, which defines the object’s altitude. The arc portion of this marine sextant is graduated into degrees from right to left, starting from 0 to 120. With a sextant, knowledge of the time and date with valid charts allows a navigator to determine his latitude or position on the surface of the earth or on the open seas.

This steel and brass sextant consists of a frame or a wedge that spans 60 degrees, an index mirror, index bar, telescope, index bar, micrometer drum, clamp, magnifying glass, arc, seven colored shade glasses, the horizon marker and miscellaneous items. Frame has a bakelite plastic grip handle that doubles for a battery charging device for the sighting device. Arc has two strong pins for resting the instrument in the case. Instrument has surface grime, easily cleaned, but appears to be missing a number of lens pieces for the magnifying glass and other components including a small screwdriver.

Comes with its original, screwed and dovetailed, double-hinged, lockable wooden case. Comes with two box keys. Custom case is divided into areas and compartments for various sextant components. Lock sticks and needs work. Box front lid has kanji label marked ‘17’ indicating the Tamaya Co. production date 1942. Original paper label on inside lid marked “Trade Mark / TAMAYA & Co Ltd / Ginza Tokyo”. Two smaller paper labels also included. Serial number on box label reads ‘1334’ while the sextant is marked ‘1335’ on the arc. A rare, cased, wartime Tamaya sextant for the Japanese Navy dated 1942.
