This is an American made Model 1917 helmet with multiple painted insignia.
The front has a black square on a red field that meas. approx. 3.50 x 3.50 with the double “A” of the “All American” Division done in white at center. From this front insignia runs a thick white line that divides the helmet in half from front to back. One side is painted a base color of red while the other side is black.
The red side has a black patch with a flying duck or goose at center done in red paint with white highlights. Above this is a bowl with ladle done in white with black shadowing.
The side of the helmet with the black base color has a flying bald eagle carrying a US shield. The eagle is done in red with white highlights while the shield is red, white and blue. Above the front wing of this eagle is a small indentation no doubt caused by the glancing blow of a bullet. The artist has painted around this impact area so that it looks like a rain drop.
The rear of the helmet is covered by a large engineer’s castle with “307 ENG.” in two lines between the keeps and the letters “T” and “R” on either side of the gate.
All the paint is 100% present and is somewhat subdued by age, dirt and storage. One of the eagle’s wings has a smeared drop of white paint. The helmet is complete with the liner and chinstrap. Both are dirty and a little dry.
The 82nd Division arrived in France in July of 1918. It took part in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives before the Armistice was signed. One of the more famous members of this Division was Medal of Honor winner Sergeant Alvin York.
