US WORLD WAR ONE MODEL 1917 HELMET WITH PAINTED 78TH DIVISION INSIGNIA

Standard issue American made US Model 1917 helmet with a dark OD painted exterior and moderate sand finish. Exterior shows light wear from age use and storage. Left side exhibits three small dents or rust spots.

Interior of helmet is complete with a good oilcloth liner and leather chinstrap. Small dot of white paint with collection number and “U.S. WW1. / 78TH DIV.” done in fine white script marked on the rim edge. The opposite edge has a period pencil inscription of the soldier’s name “LOUIS P. MOORE.”

Painted on the side is a red half circle with a white lightning bolt through the center which is the insignia of the 78th Infantry Division. Insignia is 100% intact.

The 78th Division was made up of drafted men from western New York and saw action in the St. Mihiel and Muse-Argonne operations.

This helmet is from the collection of the late Bob Jones of McSherrystown, Pa. Bob was a World War Two Navy veteran who collected World War One items from his youth.   [ad]
