American made US Model 1917 helmet with OD painted body. Exterior shows very heavy wear and crackling to paint. There is some scattered paint loss. Helmet has no dents or rust spots.
Painted on the front of the helmet is a brown elongated shield with the red numeral “1” arrowhead, point down with the silhouette of the letter “1” at center. This is the famous “Big Red One.” Insignia is 95% intact. The number is a little faint.
Interior of helmet has the liner but no chinstrap. Small dot of white paint with collection number marked on the rim edge. Both chinstrap keepers are present and attached to the helmet with round rivets.
The 1st Division was made up of Regular Army units and saw action in the Montdidier-Noyon, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel and Muse-Argonne operations.
The 1st Infantry Division is considered one of the premier U. S. Army Divisions and was the first to see action in World War one. [ad]
