Item Code: 410-188

The full length of this rifle is approx. 56.25 inches long. It has an octagon barrel that meas. approx. 41.00 inches long with a “V” notched rear sight and a long thin blade front sight mortised in place. Visible approx. 4.00 inches forward of the breech are the initials “J. K.” which may stand for J. Keller of Carlisle, Pennsylvania who is a known maker of weapons circa 1820. The barrel has a plumb brown appearance throughout and there are two small spots of white paint about midway down its length. The top of the barrel at breech shows some light surface pitting. There are also some vice marks. Bore is .50 with faint rifling. Bore needs cleaned. Barrel has a drum and nipple at breech.

Lock is set flush with the stock and has rounded ends. Lock is semi-bright with scattered mottling. The face is engraved with a scroll decoration and a scene of a hunter with flying ducks behind the hammer. Serpentine hammer is plain and rests on the original nipple and drum. Hammer moves but does not have a half or full-cock.

Stock is full length and in good condition. Wood shows minor wear. The rifle is enhanced by two German silver inlays. The first is a half-moon on the left side of the butt, on top of the small cheek rest. The second is an elongated oval at the wrist. Below the half-moon inlay is a small brass half circle and the side of the stock opposite the lock has an oval brass escutcheon. Stock has no visible cracks.

The patchbox is brass, is rectangular and is done with rococo style embellishments. The hinged patchbox lid itself is plain. The patchbox door is flanked by two brass scrolls, one on either side, and each has a cutout center. These support a flame like top also with a cut out center. Patchbox is opened by depressing a button on the brass buttplate which has a very long top and bottom tang. Mechanism operates properly. All brass has a slightly clean look.

The brass triggerguard has a long bow to accommodate double set triggers. There are also two finger rests at rear. The tangs of the triggerguard have squared ends front and back. Just forward of the guard is a decorative long rectangular brass plate with pointed ends.

Ramrod is wood. All three brass pipes are present as is the heavy brass nose cap.  [ad]
