MODEL 1916 CAMMO GERMAN HELMET WITH NAME OF US SOLDIER WHO MAILED IT HOME

$665.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 980-47

This Model 1916 German helmet has an exterior that is painted apple green with camouflage patches of ochre with thick black borders. Paint is 98% present with just some minor scuff marks here and there.

Interior has only the leather strap for the liner remaining. Both chinstrap posts are also present. The interior paint is a dark gray with a drip spot of old white paint on one side.

The inside of the back skirt has the remains of a paper label that is near impossible to read. All that can be made out is “MRS. (??) WEBSTER.” From the little that can be seen it appears to be an address label. Painted next to the label is “J. A. WEBSTER / LE MANS / FRANCE 1918.”

Quick research shows five possible soldiers named J. A. Webster.

1.)    James A. of Machine Gun Company 362nd Infantry, 91st Division

2.)    James A. of Company D, 305th Machine Gun Battalion, 77th Division

3.)    John A. of the 21st Artillery, Replacement Draft

4.)    Joh A. HQ 108th Field Artillery, 28th Division

5.)    John A. Company A, 113th Military Police Battalion

Since Le Mans was an embarkation center for the American Expeditionary Force it is doubtful the exact soldier who sent this helmet home can be found.

This helmet is really an attractive item that displays wonderfully and would work well with any World War One collection.   [ad]
