WORLD WAR TWO JAPANESE MODEL 1938 ENLISTED MAN’S TROPICAL SUN HELMET

$350.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 980-232

Woven bamboo covered with light olive drab water-resistant, cotton drill cloth. The covering is comprised of six machine sewn pieces, meeting at the apex of the crown and sewn under a reinforcing band along its brim. A 0.75 inch wide band, with a keeper to its reverse, is horizontally sewn along the mid-point of the helmet. Above the band, to its forward seam line, is a brass five pointed star. This was added by someone at some point as the correct insignia should be a sewn yellow machine woven star. It may be a period replacement. Each side also has a pair of grommets for ventilation.

The interior has a medium green colored liner that mirrors the six-piece construction of the exterior. Interior suspension is missing the headband but the six cloth loops sewn to the liner to hold it are present. Cloth chinstrap with single cloth keeper is present. Both issue tags are present on the inside and bear Japanese letters.

Helmet has a decidedly used appearance. Both the exterior and interior surface have moderate surface dirt consistent with use. Underlying bamboo is crushed ¾ of the way around the edge.  [AD]
