This type of dagger was authorized by Adolf Hitler in May of 1938 to commemorate his visit to Rome.

The dagger is a little over 15.50 inches long with a stylized eagle’s head pommel and a mother of pearl grip. The cross guard features a national eagle with upturned spread-wings with the eagle facing the viewers right. The eagle’s talons hold a wreath with a swastika at center. The pommel is secured by a special tang nut that maintains the smooth feature of the dagger.

The scabbard is identical to that of the Army dagger but has larger oak leaf suspension rings. Scabbard is silver plated.

The silver portepee is a little over 15.50 inches long with a smaller than usual acorn. The cord itself is also thin.

Production of this dagger was discontinued in July of 1942.

This example has all the correct features. The drawn dagger meas. approx. 14.50 inches from pommel to point and is just over 15.50 inches when sheathed. The silver eagle’s head pommel is superbly done with sharp, crisp details. The mother of pearl handle has aged a light yellow but still retains its luster. The guard eagle also shows very fine detail.

The double-edged blade is clean but for a few light rub marks. Obverse ricasso is maker marked “ALCOSO” over a balance scale surrounded by the letters “A C” above the scale and “S” below it. At very bottom is “SOLINGEN.”

The portepee is wrapped several times around the base of the grip and extends outward to the acorn. The cord of the portepee shows a 1.25-inch area of fraying but is still complete.

The scabbard is in excellent condition with both rings and correct mounts. There are no dings or dents to be seen.

This is a first-class German dagger in museum quality condition and would be an asset to any World War Two collection.  [ad]
