Item was the standard US Army Air Corps bombsight used during the period 1926-1939. Before 1921 the Army Air Corps used British or Naval bombsights. In 1921, George Estoppey arrived to McCook Field and developed the Estoppey D-1, which was more accurate than the sight then in use, the Mark-1.

After further improvements the US Army in 1926 accepted the D-4 bombsight which was manufactured by Gaertner Scientific Corp. In 1939 the improved Estoppey D-8 and Norden gyroscopic bombsight replaced the D-4.

This D-4 is in good condition with original finish, nice data plate, and no damage to the body. All parts move freely. The only defects are the guide wire is broken which is easy to repair and the timer does not function.

Though a number of these D-4 sights were built, they seldom come on the market.

The US Air Force Museum presently has a D-4 on display and it can be seen if one does an Internet search.
