US Revenue Cutter Service Sword, Model 1834, also referred to as US Revenue Marine. Manufactured 1834-62. A scarce sword made for officers of the United States Revenue Cutter Service or Revenue Marines. This was a small but prestigious branch of our armed forces formed in1790. This sword was produced by W.H. Horstmann / & Sons / Philadelphia as is etched on the blade. The etching begins with cross hatch, Horstmann marking, floral, a seaman and rigging, American eagle with E. Pluribus Unum, rays, floral, and oak leaves & acorns. The reverse has the king’s head stamped on the ricasso (Weyersberg marking), cross hatch, floral, a large fouled anchor within a wreath, a stand of ancient arms and flags, and a repeat of the eagle, floral and oak design.

The guard has floral quillons and a folding guard on each side. The outer guard is a beautiful eagle clutching a Federal shield and the reverse counter guard is plain. The silver grip has a spiral design front and back with smooth side panels. The dome shaped pommel is cast on the obverse with stars / a ribbon reading LIBERTY and arrows of lightning bolts. The reverse is cast with a Federal Shield surrounded by stars. The top of the tang is covered with an applied star. There is no scabbard. A nice example for any sword collection.   [ss] [ph:L]
