There are only six known examples (Louis Froelich, Arms-Maker to the Confederacy by McAden & Fonvielle, pg. 56) of this unique Cavalry officer’s pattern, which has a large brass guard with “C.S.A.” cutout in the hilt, brown leather wrapped grip with a single strand brass wire. The blade is cavalry length with a single unstopped fuller. The scabbard is of classic Froehlich construction – steel sheath with a lapped seam, brass mounted ring bands and drag, with the distinctive Kenansville squared toe drag. A similar pattern to this sword with smaller proportions was made for staff officers in a larger quantity, but the Cavalry officer pattern is a great rarity in Confederate swords.

This pattern sword is pictured on the front cover of Louis Froelich, Arms-Maker to the Confederacy by McAden & Fonvielle, and on page 40 of Albaugh’s Confederate Swords.    [gj] [ph:L]
