Item is a delicate ivory oval with a painted portrait identified as William C. Robinson of Company G, 6^th Virginia Infantry.

Oval meas. approx. 2.25 x 3.00 inches with a full color bust portrait of Robinson at center. He wears a gray forage cap with black visor and a gray shell jacket open to reveal a white shirt and dark bowtie. The artist has achieved a perfect skin tone with a light rose tint to the cheeks. Robinsons brown eyes are large and expressive with black eyebrows and hair. This is all done against a medium gray background that allows the brightness and features of Robinson’s face to shine forth from the surface of the ivory.

Paint is perfect and free of any chips or scratches. Reverse has a pencil inscription of “WM. C. ROBINSON.” Identity is confirmed by a CDV of Robinson published on his findagrave.com site as well as an identified image held at the Library of Congress, a scan of which is shown above for comparison purposes.

William Colston Robinson was born on March 3, 1845. He was educated at Turner’s School and Richmond & Columbia college in Washington, D.C.

On October 18, 1861, at age 16, he enlisted for one year’s service at Carney Island, Virginia in Company G, 6^th Virginia Infantry.

Robinson reenlisted for the duration of the war on February 18, 1862 and saw service in Jackson’s Valley Campaign, during the Seven Days Battles, South Mountain and Antietam. He was wounded at 2^nd Manassas on August 30, 1862 and was sent to General Hospital #4 at Richmond. In late September he was given a furlough to recover at home. He did not return to his regiment until March of 1863.

Present for Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, Robinson was killed in action at Bristoe Station on October 14, 1863 and was buried in Richmond’s Hollywood Cemetery.  [ad] [ph:L]
