CONFEDERATE 6-POUNDER CANNON BALL FROM THE MOLLUS COLLECTION IN PHILADELPHIA

$895.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1052-08

Offered here is a C.S. 3.67” (6-pounder) Bormann spherical shell. It has a thin-walled, iron body and has a threaded fuse opening for the Bormann time fuse. This shell is unusual as there is no arrangement for an under plug to support the Bormann fuse. No fuse is present.

Iron remains very clean and a nice thin mold seam is visible. A MOLLUS inventory number is located on the bottom of the shell (86.1.66).

This was in the collection of the War Library and Museum of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the U.S. in Philadelphia until recently. That organization was formed by veteran Union officers in 1865 and reached its height with about 8,000 members in 1900. Their library and museum was incorporated in 1888 and from 1922 was housed in a townhouse on Pine Street in Philadelphia. It closed in 2008. Much of its material was placed with other museums, and the remainder was sold at auction. We were able to purchase this at Redding’s Auction in 2021.  [jet] [ph:L]
