The full title of this work is “THE PAINFUL NEWS I HAVE TO WRITE: LETTERS AND DIARIES OF FOUR HITE BROTHERS OF PAGE COUNTY IN THE SERVICE OF THE CONFEDERACY” by Harlan R. Jessup and published by Butternut & Blue, Baltimore, Maryland in 1998 as part of their “ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA SERIES.”

Book is hardbound with a black dust jacket featuring the Army of Northern Virginia battle flag at center. Dust jacket is in excellent condition. The covers themselves are black cloth with the title in red.

Volume meas. approx. 6.25 x 9.25 inches and runs 204 pages with index. Interior is very clean.

Of the four Hite sons followed in this book, three died fighting with the Stonewall Brigade’s 33rd Virginia. David was wounded at 2nd Manassas, captured at Gettysburg, paroled and killed at Winchester in September of 1864. William was wounded at 1st Manassas and died of typhoid fever in November of 1861 and John died of wounds received at Gettysburg. The lone survivor, Isaac Hite, was with Lee’s Body Guard.
