Titled “Parting Words for Our Soldiers,” this is one of the many religious, inspirational, and moral tracts handed out to soldiers by religious and charitable groups. This one was specfically distributed by the U.S. Christian Commission, which tried to augment government efforts to meet the spiritual and material needs of the men and who were often seen in army camps.
This one is soft bound, as most were, and has gilt blind stamped black covers with floral borders. The back cover has a large display of arms with “United States Christian Commission” over the top and bottom and a central panel reading, “Watch and pray lest ye enter into temptation.” This has some minor stains inside and one torn and one creased corner on the back, but displays well. These are often found among soldier’s personal effects, playing cards and such likely being jettisoned before returning home. [sr] [ph:m]
