$175.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 668-378

Volume meas. approx. 7.50 x 10.00 inches with marbled hard covers with red leather spine and corners.

The volume contains copies of “THE MILITARY GAZETTE” which was published on the 1st and 15th of every month. This volume contains issues running from January 1, 1861 to April 1, 1861. Each issue is approx. 16 pages and covers military news of the time as well as stories of military historical interest. There is a section of new books on military topics as well as a list of promotions within the regular army of the time. Each issue has several articles on military topics such as engineering or uniforms of the Continental Army, legislation which affects the military, biographies of Generals and much more of a military nature.

The inside front cover has a large cartoon cut from a paper and pasted inside. It shows a Civil War general dragging a large heavy bag labeled “U.S. STRATEGICAL DEPART.” With rats escaping through holes in the bottom and sides of the bag. The cartoon is labeled “HOW ‘LITTLE MAC’ BAGGED THE REBELS.”

Among the pages of the gazette are pages of ruled paper with period ink notations on them. Many of the notations are in regard to articles appearing in the gazette and some are historical notations on military campaigns. Though the gazettes date from 1861 there are some notations in the book relating to things that happened later in the Civil War so whoever owned this book continued to refer to it throughout the war. For instance, the first page has a notation mentioning the death of Confederate General Felix Zollicoffer which took place in 1862. The same page has a notation mentioning the death of Union General Nathaniel Lyon in August of 1861. There is even the text of a complete letter dated 1881.

This is an excellent item to spend time with reading the different copies of the gazette as well as piecing together all the interesting notations.

Volume is in good condition with only one loose page at the front. The rest is tight and readable.  [ad] [ph:L]
