Known as the "Cattaraugus Regiment", the 64th New York was mustered in at Elmira in early December 1861. Attached to the 2nd Army Corps, from McClellan's Peninsula Campaign on, the 64th was in engaged in all the campaigns and major battles of the Army of the Potomac from start to finish--Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, Hatcher's Run, and Appomattox. During service the unit lost 173 men killed and mortally wounded and 160 by disease for a total of 292.
