The full title of this volume is “THE SEVENTY-NINTH HIGHLANDERS NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS IN THE WAR OF THE REBELLION 1861-1865.”

The author is William Todd who served in Company B of the regiment. The book was published in Albany, New York by Brandow, Barton & Co. in 1886.

Volume is hardcover and meas. approx. 6.75 x 9.75 inches and runs 513 pages with index and numerous maps and engravings.

Covers are the original greenish blue cloth with gold embossed title and author’s name on the spine. The book was rebound using the original covers and adding only new front and back endpapers. Both front and back covers show light wear from age. Binding is excellent, interior is clean though pages have yellowed with age.

The 79th New York Highlanders were organized in May of 1861 and served a majority of their time in the 9th Corps. They were at 1st and 2nd Bull Run, Chantilly, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Jackson, Blue Springs and Spotsylvania before being mustered out in 1865. The regiment lost heavily at 1st Bull Run and on James Island in June of 1862. During its service the regiment suffered the loss of 4 officers and 194 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease and many others wounded and survived.  [AD] [PH:L]
