This copy, printed by Lippincott of Philadelphia in 1862, details the regulations and doctrines of the US Army as of May 1, 1861. It includes instruction on all matters from tactics to drill across different sizes of commands (Company, Battalion, etc.).
The book is covered in green cloth with embossed eagle and geometric patterns at front and rear. Gilt text on spine is complete, with a spot of wear over the publisher credit at the bottom edge. Generally, the cover shows some dust accumulation and minor spot wear, but remains complete and secure. Some forward spine tilt is noted. Pages are complete and in good condition, as are original plate illustrations. A penciled notation on the inside cover reads “Sept. 10 / 62” with initials below. A partially legible signature written in pencil is observed on the inside of the rear cover. Dimensions are 4” x 5.4”.
A very necessary, original title for understanding the mechanics of Civil War combat. [cm][ph:L]
