This was produced in 1864 by the engraving company Keatringe & Ball of Columbia, SC. Edward Keatinge ran an engraving company in New York, but would later be recruited by the Confederacy to produce money. He partnered with Thomas Ball, of Virginia, and held shop in Richmond, eventually re-locating to Columbia, SC.
The bill is in good condition with reddish brown overlay, with some signs of fading. The center is an image of the ‘likeness’ of Lucy Holcombe Pickens, wife to Francis Pickens governor of South Carolina from 1860-1862. The image is to be representative of women of the Confederacy. The bottom right corner is an image of Confederate Secretary of War George Randolph and on the opposite side are two Confederate soldiers. Bill is stamped with serial number 46893. The reverse is decorated in blue ink with “HUNDRED” worded in the center. Each corner also has a small medallion with “100”. A light center fold line is evident on both front and reverse, as well as a crease on the top left corner. [mk] [ph:L]
