Item Code: 172-5371

A nicely present group of five documents in a gilt frame relating to service and pension records. Four of the pieces relate to Solomon Doremus, who served in the 19th NY Militia, which did three months of federal service in 1862, and in the 3rd NY Infantry, where he was wounded at Drewry’s Bluff May 16, 1864. On 5/25/62 he enlisted in New York City at age 37 and was mustered into Co. L of the 19th as of the same day and served with regiment at Baltimore, mustering out 9/6/62 and then mustering in to Co. B of the 3rd NY Volunteers as of 9/17/62. This unit saw a good deal of action, losing 7 officers and 36 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded while serving in the 7th, 18th, 10th and 24th Army Corps (as well as other organizations,) and fighting at Drewry’s Bluff, Petersburg and even Fort Fisher. Drewry’s Bluff , where Doremus was wounded, was one of the regiment’s early engagements. How severely he was wounded is not clear, but he was not mustered out until 6/15/65 and the documents indicate his widow was seeking a pension by the Fall of 1866.

The frame includes an envelope from the “Protective war claim and pension agency of the US Sanitary Commission” addressed to Doremus himself, a document from the same office addressed to Doremus, a Department of the Interior Pension Office letter to his widow asking for evidence for a claim, and a pension document for Doremus with a note regarding a new certificate for his widow.

These are framed with a fifth piece regarding the death of a soldier in the 20th USCT that seems unrelated, though all pieces are telling reminders of the costs of the war, costs that were borne by veterans and their survivors for many years after.  [SR]
