Dated “”17th day of July, 1864.” Signed by “John M. Dean, Adjt. Of the Regiment.” Pre-printed government document. One page, entries in ink, 8.625” x 11. Exhibits fold-marks, else VG.

John A. Tighe was a 23 year-old carpenter, born in Manchester, England, mustered as a Private into Co. “K”, 29th Mass. Infantry, 5/22/1861. He re-enlisted 1/1/1864 and died of wounds received in action at Petersburg, VA, 6/17/1864. He was 5’ 11.5” high, had light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. He had been last paid through February 1, 1864, and  “has pay due him through this date”-7/17/1864. He had received from the United States $60 advanced Bounty.

There was nothing to be stopped for clothing or other stoppages. The document concludes with this ink inscription from Regimental Adjutant Lt. Deane—“there being no commissioned officer present in co. “K” and the clothing account being at the rear is cannot be given.”

The 29th Massachusetts was mustered at Newport News, VA, in November 1861. It served primarily with the 9th Army Corps, and was present and/or engaged in numerous battles, including The Seven Days Battles before Richmond, Antietam, the Siege of Vicksburg, Fort Stedman, Siege and occupation of Petersburg.  During service this unit lost 57 men killed and mortally wounded and 99 by disease for a total of 156.
