Text: “General Orders No. 60—Extract…
Before a General Court-Martial, convened at Head quarter…were arraigned and tried…Private William Collier, Co. “K”, 29th Mass. Vet. Vols. on the following---Charge-Desertion / Finding-Guilty / Sentence-to forfeit all pay due or to become due and to be confined at hard labor at the Dry Torugas or such other public fortification as the Commanding General may direct—for the remainder of his term of service…The proceedings, finding and sentence in the case of Pvt. Wm. Collier are approved…Pvt. Collier will be turned over with a copy of this order and his descriptive list to the Provost-Marshal General of the Army of the Potomac fro transportation to the Dry Tortugas. / By command of Brig. Genl. O.B. Wilcox…A true copy, John M. Deane /Captain, Co. “K”, 29th Mass. Vet. Vols.”
William Collier was a 24 year Laborer mustered as a Private into Co. “K”, 29th Infantry, 8/17/1864, and was court-martialed for desertion and dishonorably discharged, 7/15/ 1865.
Lieut. John Deane was a 24 year-old Freetown, MA, teacher who was commissioned as Lieut. into Co. “G”, 29th Mass. Infantry, 6/1/1861. He was promoted to Captain, 6/8/1864, and received the Medal of Honor for action at Ft. Stedman, 3/25/1865, as well promotion to Major, 5/15/ 1865.
