The Confederate Government of Wythe County, Virginia issued this allotment check, numbered 960 on the back and dated April 14th, 1864 to Mrs. Ann Davis in the amount of five dollars for the family of John Harold Child [?] a soldier in the 51st Virginia Regiment. Signed by Thomas H. Simmerman, Comr. 5th district.
Apparently Ann’s husband John Harold Child [?] had been killed early in the war and she remarried a man named Davis. The check was issued for the benefit of John Chick’s children. No additional information could be confirmed about Child. [ld] [ph:L]
