The Confederate Government of Wythe County, Virginia issued this allotment check, numbered 759 on the back and dated May 4th, 1864 to Rhoda Hoback in the amount of twenty dollars for the family of Charles Hoback, a soldier in the 51st Virginia Regiment.  Signed by Thomas H. Simmerman, Comr. 5th district. Countersigned on the reverse, “Rhody Hoback”.

Hoback was a Private in Co. C, 51st VA Regt. He enlisted April 1, 1862 at Wytheville; POW Waynesboro March 2, 1865, Harpers Ferry to Winchester to Ft. Delaware March 12, 1865, released there June 20, 1865. He died in 1905 and is buried in Fairview United Methodist Church Cemetery in Wytheville, VA, next to Rhoda, who died in 1900.  [ld] [ph:L]
