The Confederate Government of Wythe County, Virginia issued this allotment check, numbered 109 on the back and dated January 27th, 1864 to Elizabeth Walters in the amount of twenty dollars for the family of John B. Walters, a soldier in the 63rd Virginia Regiment.  Signed by M. S. Steffey, Comr. 6 district. Countersigned on the reverse, “Elizabeth / X / Her Mark”.

On 5/15/1862 Walters mustered into "H" Co., 63rd VA as a private.  He was listed as: POW 8/24/63, place not stated; returned 2/22/64, place not stated. POW 6/22/64 at Mount Zion Church, GA. Took the Oath of Allegiance on 7/1/64 at Chattanooga, TN. He was described at enlistment as: 5' 8", light complexion, blue eyes, brown hair.     [ld] [ph:L]
