Two preprinted documents filled out in period ink and dated 1912. Documents meas. approx. 8.50 x 10.00 inches and are in good condition.

The first document is for Newsome H. Harrison of Company H, 10th North Carolina State Troops which became the 1st North Carolina Artillery. Document is signed by him and endorsed by William Beasley who was lieutenant colonel of the 71st North Carolina Troops.

Newsome H. Harrison was born December 16, 1845. He enlisted at Plymouth as a private in the 10th North Carolina State Troops (1st Artillery) on June 1, 1864. He was with his Company until early 1865 when he was detailed as a scout for the Department of North Carolina. He served until the surrender of the Confederate armies. Harrison died March 5, 1933 and is buried in the Bowen-Harrison Cemetery in Plymouth,, North Carolina. A photograph of Harrison as an old man can be found on his findagrave.com entry.

The witness of the document Lieutenant Colonel William Fessenden Beasley first served as a 2nd lieutenant in Company H, 48th North Carolina Infantry. He was wounded at Fredericksburg and on June 2, 1864 transferred to the 71st North Carolina also known as the 2nd Regiment North Carolina Junior Reserves with whom he served in a support role till the end of the war.

The second document is for Haywood B. McCabe of Company H, 2nd North Carolina Light Artillery which reorganized and became the 17th North Carolina Infantry. Document is signed by McCabe and endorsed by William H. Hardison, sergeant major of the 32nd North Carolina.

Haywood B. McCabe enlisted in Washington County, North Carolina on June 17, 1862. He was present with his Company until August 15, 1864 when he became ill. His records end there and it is assumed he was absent when the war ended. McCabe would have been present for the actions at Kinston, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.

The witness on this document William H. Hardison served as a private in Company A, 32nd North Carolina from June 1, 1863 until January 18, 1865 when he was made sergeant major. He was present for the surrender at Appomattox.
