UNIDENTIFIED PORTRAIT OF AN AUSTRIAN OFFICER DATED 1874

$2,500.00

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 740-827

This oil on canvas portrait was done by Johann Bloss and is dated November 15, 1874. Unfortunately all efforts to identify the subject or to find a biography of the artist have failed. From the markings on the back it is known that the canvas was purchased from the ANTON MAURER CO.  in Vienna, Austria.

The canvas on the wood stretcher meas. approx. 22.00 x 27.00 inches with the actual painting done in an oval. The subject is a bespectacled, bearded, middle aged officer wearing a dark double-breasted frock coat with a gold embroidered collar with a fold down front that has two pips on each side. The painting is dirty but in good condition overall. There is no paint loss or crackling. The artist signed the painting at the lower right “JOH. BLOSS. 1874-15 NOVEMBER.”

The stretcher has come loose from the frame and needs remounting. The frame meas. approx. 27.00 x 33.50 inches. The frame may not be the original for this painting as the interior has been crudely cut to accept this stretcher. The frame is painted with gold gilt paint with ornate scroll decorations in the four corners done with plaster. Inside the frame is a cut oval mat decorated along its border with a leaf design and in the corners with a leaf and scroll design.
