Published by Paul & Dominic Colnaghi & Co, Publishers to Her Majesty, London, 13 & 14 Pall Mall East, 1855-56. Bordered in white, these scenic lithos measure 21.5 x 14”, titled as follows: [1] Prince Woronzoff’s Palace/ Near Yalta On the South Coast of the Crimea, (2) Sebastopol From the 26 gun Battery on the Extreme Right of French Attack, (3) The Monastery of St. George and Cape Fiolente/Looking West, (4) Interior of Fort Nicholas, (5) Camp of the 4th Division, (6) The Town Batteries Or Interior Fortifications of Sebastopol/ From the Advanced Parallel of Chapman’s Attack, 23 June 1855, (7) Ditch of the Malakoff, Battery Gervais and Rear of the Redan, (8) Camp of the 3rd Division, (9) The North Side of the Harbor of Sebastopol, (10) The Graves in the Fort on Cathcart’s Hill/ Of the Officers of the 4th Division Who Fell at Inkerman.

The white bordering of most these lithos are somewhat chipped at the margins, with two exhibiting light water staining also in the margins. The lithographs themselves, however, are clean and attractive, w/excellent color. Most interesting is the piece featuring “The Graves on In The Fort On Cathcart Hill.” Attached to its reverse is a small black and white map pinpointing and listing officers names with each of the 20 graves depicted. For example: Lieutenant Curton, 63rd Regt, Lieut. Col. Swyny, 63rd Regt., Capt. Blanch, 57th Regiment, et al..

During the Crimean War the British 4th Division was engaged in the Battles of Alma, Inkerman and Balaclava; while 3rd Division participated at Alma and at the Siege of Sebastopol.

Fascinating set of Crimean prints, attractive and entirely suitable for framing. Invites further research by Crimean aficionados, especially those interested in 4th Division officer KIAs at Inkerman.  [jp]
