Typical eagle masthead discharge for Hiram Swisher who served in Captain J. W. Allen’s Company M of the 100th Pennsylvania Infantry for one year.

The document has browned with age and has a water stain across the bottom but it is nicely housed in an original period frame that has been painted a sky-blue infantry color with a gold interior border. Frame meas. approx. 10.75 x 12.75 inches and shows light surface dirt and light wear along edges.

Hiram Swisher was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania on July 7, 1829. Swisher was working as a shoemaker when he enlisted into Company D, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry on November 4, 1862. The regiment served with the 18th Corps in the Department of North Carolina and ended its nine-months service in the pursuit of Lee’s army after Gettysburg.

Swisher enlisted again on February 22, 1865, this time for one years’ service in Company M, 100th Pennsylvania Infantry and took part in the siege of Petersburg. He was engaged in the fight for Fort Stedman on March 25, 1865 where his regiment lost 12 killed, 44 wounded and 18 captured. Swisher was mustered out on July 24, 1865.

After the war Swisher returned home to his wife Catherine and three children. Over the intervening years he would have two more children before dying of a stroke on August 27, 1906. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, Pennsylvania.  [ad][ph:L]
