US NAVY DISCHARGE AND CDV IDENTIFIED TO A CHARLES W. WOOD

This small group of items consists of a Navy discharge, CDV and post-war envelope all identified to Charles W. Wood of Rockville, Connecticut.

The pre-printed discharge is filled out in period ink that is very readable. The document meas. approx. 10.75 x 4.25 inches and is decorated with a sailing ship along one margin and an eagle, shield and laurel wreath along the other. The document is dated June 19, 1867 and is in good condition with some minor chipping along one edge with several faint fold lines. Reverse has Woods personal information such as enlistment date, hometown, occupation etc…

With the discharge is a bust view CDV of an unidentified sailor in uniform. It is assumed that this is Landsman Charles W. Wood. Image has very good clarity and contrast with surface dirt around the edges. Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for C.H. HOPKINS…ANNAPOLIS.

The last item in the group is a small post-war envelope from THE HAMMOND BUCKLE CO. in ROCKVILLE, CONN. Written in strong period ink on the front is “CHARLES W. WOOD / DISCHARGE FROM U.S. NAVY 1864 to 1867. Both the CDV and discharge were obviously stored in this envelope.

Charles W. Wood was born Yorkshire, England on December 22, 1846. He came to the United States when he was still very young. He was residing in Rockville, Connecticut when at age 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Landsman on June 28, 1864. He was discharged on June 19, 1867. After his discharge he worked for the railroad and in 1878 he became the superintendent of the Rockville Water & Aqueduct Company.  He was also a member of the Thomas Burpee Post of the GAR in Rockville.

Wood died at his home on August 10, 1910 and is buried in Rockville’s Grove Hill Cemetery. [ad][ph:L]
