This is a pair of lieutenant of infantry shoulder straps. They measure approximately 4 ¼” x 1 ½”. These are single bordered, infantry straps. The bullion embroidered borders are in fair condition with good, age appropriate tarnishing. The fields are dark blue and show a number of moth holes.

The embroidered thread and spiral wire edges show some wear, small “pulls”, and a few small traces of green tarnish. Stray threads indicate these were once sewn to a coat. These show use and wear but remain in good overall condition.

The two are pinned together with an old brass safety pin and have come with a pencil note that claims these are from Charles E. Pruyn.

Pruyn was 21 years old when he enlisted on 10/19/1861 at Plattsburg, NY.  He was commissioned as a 1^st lieutenant into Company “A” of the 96^th NY Infantry, eventually being made adjutant.  In September he was commissioned into Field & Staff of the 118^th NY Infantry. Promoted to Major in June 1863. He was killed on 6/15/1864 at Petersburg during one of the opening battles of what would become the Petersburg Campaign.
