Dated “Long Island, Boston Harbor / Mass. Jan. 28th, 1864. One page in ink on unlined paper, 7.75” x 10. Exhibits fold-marks, else VG.

In this letter Lt. Deane reports the delivery of 127 recruits of the 54th & 55th MA regiments to their regiments at Folly Island and Morris Island, SC. It should be added that the 54th Mass. recruits were undoubtedly  mustered to bolster the 54th ranks following  losses incurred in the earlier June assault on Ft. Wagner.

Text:

I have the honor to report that, in accordance with special orders No. 8 from headquarters of this post I proceeded one the 14th inst., with a party of (127) One hundred and twenty-seven Colored Volunteers &conscripts for the 54th and 55th Mass. Regt. to Boston and thence to New York where we embarked on the U.S. steamship “Fulton” which sailed on the morning of the 16th inst. For Port Royal S.C.

We arrived at the latter place on the evening of the 19th inst. And proceeded next morning per steamer “B. Deford” to Tawnee Landing, Folly Island, S.C. where by order of Col. Jackson the recruits for the 55th Mass Regt. were turned over to the Front Royal Provost Marshall of that place to be forwarded to their regiment.

Then proceeded to the camp of the 54th Mass. Regt. on Morris Island, S.C. where the recruits for that regiment were turned over to its Commanding Officer. I herewith transmit the receipts taken, all of which is respectfully submitted / John M. Deane/ Lieut. 29th Mass. Vols. // To Lieut. W.A Hill /Actg. Asst. Adjt. General / Long Island B. Harbor.”

Lieut. John Milton Deane was a 24 year-old Freetown, MA, teacher who was commissioned as Lieut. into Co. “G”, 29th Mass. Infantry, 6/1/1861. He was promoted to Captain, 6/8/1864, and received the Medal of Honor for action at Ft. Stedman, 3/25/1865 as well as promotion to Major, 5/15/1865.
