Text: “Dear Sister…I write you these lines to inform you that I am well. Hoping this finds your all well.

I left the Regt. last Sunday and came here Monday night. They are sending all the sick and disabled to the rear. I expect they will make a move in a short time.

I don’t recon I will stay here but a short time but I don’t know here I will be sent next. I have no new to write so will close. I many stay here long enough for you to send me a letter. So you will to the above aadress, John Mc Donald.”

Inasmuch as “John McDonald” fails to denote his regiment or the year of writing, this letter invites further research in North Carolina regimental records. He addresses it to a single sister—“Miss Margaret McDonald”—in Carthage, NC, which is located in Moore County,  which furnished five John McDonalds to Confederate  service, albeit from different regiments.  Possibly among these a John McDonalds from Moore County can be found a resident from Carthage who was hospitalized in Lynchburg  in April 1862-63-or ’64. Good luck! In a protective sleeve.  [JP]  [ph:L]
