In the 1880s tiny Emporia was a two newspaper town, boasting not only the Daily Republican but the Emporia Gazette, which was to gain renown under the editorship of William White, whose 1896 editorial—“What’s the Matter With Kansas”—put Emporia on the national map.

This particular issue dates from the first Grover Cleveland administration, and its front-page headlines reflect a national business point of view. To wit: “The Railroad Commission Resumes Investigations—Examination of the President of the Union Pacific—Western r Violating the Interstate Law—Duties Suspended on all Vessels From the Netherlands.”

The wide-ranging finance and trade column lists market and stock prices in New York, Kansas City, St. Louis and Chicago. The baseball column provides the latest scores from Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Washington, Topeka and Omaha. The casualty and crime column is equally wide ranging. To wit; “Desperate Train Robbery in Central Arizona”—"The Bald Knobbers Grand Jury Completes Its Work”—“A Prohibitionist Murdered By a Saloon Keeper”—“Three Children Burned to Death Near Whitewright, Tex.”—"Five Boys In Indiana Poisoned By Eating Will Parsnips.”

Many fascinating and humorous local advertisements, including this one from the rear page:

“Western Conservatory of Music…Mrs. Chase desires ten misses, five boys, under the age of fifteen years. Will give them instructions, vocal and instrumental, free of charge uni9tl the 1st of June—None need apply that cannot sing.”
