This is a small lot of photographs that comes to us from a local Gettysburg citizen whose family were friends of the Heidtke family. The Heidtke’s were friends with Albert Speer and visited him on several occasions after World War Two. This small lot of five snap shots were given by Mr. Waldemar Heidtke to our sources father. The images show the Heidtke’s visiting with Speer and one of the photos is signed by the Reich’s minister.
First in the group is a 4.25 x 3.00 inch black and white photo glued to a small sheet of paper and shows Mr. Heidtke and several other people seated at a table with Albert Speer having dinner. A notation on the back of the image reads “WE ENTERTAINED THE SPEER FAMILY ON DECEMBER 6, 1970. HERR SPEER IS THE AUTHOR OF THE BEST SELLER “INSIDE THE THIRD REICH.”
The next three images are color Polaroid snapshots meas. approx. 3.50 x 3.50 inches and are from June of 1972. They show Mr. Heidtke and his wife with Albert Speer at his home in Heidelberg, Germany. The first of the three is a view of the house and grounds. On the reverse is typed “IN FRONT OF THE SPEER HOME IN HEIDELBERG.” The second shows Mr. & Mrs. Heidtke with Speer on the steps of his home. The reverse of the image has a typed inscription that reads “ON JUNE 17, 1972, WE WERE GUESTS AT THE HOME OF THE FAMILY OF HERR AND FRAU SPEER. THE PICTURE ON WHICH HERR SPEER APPEARS WITH MY WIFE AND ME WAS TAKEN SHORTLY BEFORE OUR DEPARTURE FROM THE BEAUTIFUL SPEER HOME AND SURROUNDINGS.” The third image is the same as the previous one but it has a handwritten inscription on the back that reads “ON JUNE 17, 1972 WE WERE THE GUESTS OF THE SPEERS. AS YOU READILY KNOW HERR SPEER IS A MOST WONDERFUL MAN. HE PAID THE PRICE FOR BECOMING INVOLVED IN THE WORKS OF THE SAVAGE HITLER GANG.”
The last photo in the lot is a 5.00 x 3.75 inch black and white snapshot ofAlbert Speer and Mr. Heidtke seated in chairs close together in conversation while drinking coffee. The photo is signed in ink in the left corner “ALBERT SPEER 28 4 80” which is the European way of writing the date April 28, 1980.
Also with the group is a clipped newspaper story of Albert Speer’s death from The Washington Post dated September 2, 1981. [ad] [ph:L]
