This British-made accoutrement is an original saber bayonet made for the two-band Enfield .577 caliber musket. Bayonet measures 28” overall and has a 22¾” long steel blade with a single 15½” long fuller on each flat. All iron is an even light gray overall with scattered patches of old surface oxidation. Blade is marked with the Kirschbaum knight’s head symbol on left side of ricasso, “S / 18” on the right side and “S / 4” on the spine of the blade.
Cross guard measures 4 ¼”. Quillions at bottom and atop muzzle ring. Grips are checkered black leather and remain in excellent condition. Has “bird’s head” shaped pommel. Locking spring remains in place with “button” release. “S / 18” is again stamped on top of tang just in front of the recessed channel.
Scabbard and frog are also in overall very good condition. Black leather scabbard is complete with iron tip and throat. The “button” holding the scabbard in the frog has a worn “GA / 21” stamped on the face. Leather is strong and seam stitching is tight and unbroken. Surface finish is moderately crazed with some loss but still quite presentable.
Leather frog is firmly attached to the scabbard. Leather is in excellent condition and stitching remains strong and unbroken. Small strap and roller buckle holds scabbard in place. This strap is complete but broken at hole for buckle tine.
A very nice pattern-1856 Enfield saber bayonet complete with scabbard and frog! [jet]
