Item Code: 490-3016

An original Harpers Ferry sword bayonet of the type that was being retrofitted for the older Model 1841 “Mississippi” rifles. Measures 27 ¼” long overall with a 22 3/8” long blade. The blade has a good edge and point with no nicks. Blade is clean and bright. Fullers terminate with flat edges at the ricasso. Inspector’s stamp “PB / P” is on the right-side ricasso.

The cast brass hilt is clean. The cross guard and ribbed handle are secured to the blade via a single transverse steel pin through the guard. The locking mechanism is intact and functional. Various small proof marks stamped on the handle. Small inspector’s letter stamps: “S” on first rib of grip and “W” within the key slot. As is correct for this pattern of bayonet, there are no markings other than the small proof marks, since all of them were made at the Harpers Ferry Armory.

Scabbard is equally nice with black bridle leather showing very little wear. Stitching is complete and unbroken. Brass tip is secured with all four brads; one minor dent.

Original leather frog is secured to the scabbard by way of a leather strap that fits through a brass loop protruding from the scabbard throat. The whole rig is suspended from a waist belt by two belt loops. The loos are stitched and riveted. All stitching on the frog is complete and unbroken.

A scarce and complete bayonet rig in excellent condition.  [jet] [ph:L]
