REMINGTON ZOUAVE SWORD BAYONET

Item Code: 490-2649

This is a good example the sword/saber bayonet for the Remington Model 1862 US Contract Rifle, best known as the “Remington Zouave.” The brass hilt shows several deep dings on the pommel and the guard shows some shallower marks. The top flat shows 7 or 8 small marks, but has a very legible BH inspector’s stamp and generally smooth surface. The mortise is good and the spring catch is functional, and the grip ridges retain their textured surface. The hilt shows the usual C sub-inspector stamps and the blade, though having dark gray stains has a good edge and point and shows the small S sub-inspector stamp on the reverse near the guard.

Remington produced their Model 1862 U.S. Contract Rifle from 1863 to 1864, delivering 10,001 to the government (the odd number includes one sample gun.) The brass mounted rifle acquired its nickname among collectors from its beautiful and somewhat fancy appearance, like period zouave uniforms, but their period use is undocumented.

This would display well with a rifle or fit in a display of the many types of saber and sword bayonets produced during the war.
