This knife is probably Mexican in origin, though it may well have seen use north of the border. The round wood grip has a nice surface and color and shows very pretty graining. The pommel is brass, as is a small ferrule at the bottom of the grip. The guard is iron, flat and oval with round quillons and small bulb finials similar to the pommel cap. The blade is spearpoint with a median ridge and significant false edge on top and flat lower portion forward of the guard forming a ricasso before the start of the cutting edge. The knife measures 16 ½ inches overall with the blade showing a tiny bit of the tip missing and measuring just shy of 11 inches. This comes with its original leather scabbard, measuring about 17 inches long, a deep Burgundy in color, with leather collar and drag.

The blade bears a large set of initials “R.P.” engraved on one side of the ricasso. The other side is engraved in script, “Ano / de / 1856.” The “A” of “Ano” is very clear. The last two letters are slightly rubbed, but we think we have it right: “Year of 1856.” The blade is smooth metal, a muted silver gray in color, with some darker gray spots. The wood grip shows just minor handling marks.

This is a very good looking side knife dating to the early west and would look great in cowboy or frontier collection, or even a display relating to Civil War Texas.  [sr] [ph:L]
