SCABBARD ONLY FOR THE S&K IMPORT MODEL 1840 US CAVALRY SABER DATED 1847 – 1 OF 1000 MADE

$500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1099-17

In the 1840’s Ames had a contract with the government to produce cavalry and artillery sabers of the Model 1840 type. With the outbreak of the Mexican War the government saw that production was not fast enough to fill the needs of the federal, volunteer and state militia forces so, in 1847 they contracted with S&K for 1000 cavalry sabers of the Model 1840 pattern. This scabbard is one from that production run.

The scabbard is complete with both rings and mounts, throat, drag and is free of dents. The surface has a nice dark patina.

A close look at the drag will reveal a small crown over the inspector’s initial “G” over the year “47” with “S&K” stamped into the bottom center of the drag.

A scabbard with similar markings can be seen on page 374 of John Thillmann’s book “CIVIL WAR CAVALRY & ARTILLERY SABERS.”  [ad] [ph:L]
