This is a Civil War saber that was to be the new “light cavalry” saber. This specimen was part of a first contract for this new, lighter cavalry sword and is quite a scarce specimen.
Weighing just less than four pounds, the slightly curved blade measures 34½” long with a wide fuller running approximately 27” and a narrow fuller about 18 ½” long. Clearly stamped on the reverse ricasso of the blade is the three-line maker’s address in block style letters that reads “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS”. Obverse ricasso shows “US / ADK”. Blade wears a mottled, gray patina. No leather washer. A few small nicks along the edge.
The three-branch brass guard retains a nice mellow patina overall. The ribbed grip with center swell is covered with partial remains of black leather wrap; worn off raised areas. Double twisted brass wire is complete and in place. Cavalry saber is fitted with a brass pommel cap of the Phrygian design common on all M1860 sabers. Inspector’s initials on pommel are “ADK” and RHKW”.
John Tillman’s book on Civil War cavalry and artillery sabers details the specifics of this undated style of sword from the first Ames contract for model 1860 swords made before 1860! Many of these “first” swords were found to be inferior or defective and rejected by inspectors.
Strong, steel scabbard is unadorned. It has acquired a dark brown patina with a lightly pitted surface; characteristic of long storage in a damp environment. Sword mounts are strong and retain the rings. Scabbard is undented and the drag has no visible inspector stamp.
This undated light cavalry saber is a rare example of Ames’ first contract for them done in 1857. [jet] [ph:L]
