MODEL 1840 AMES “WRIST BREAKER” WITH SCABBARD, DATED 1847

$1,150.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 33-223

This is the classic "wrist breaker" used before and during the Civil War.

The curved blade is over 35 inches in length. Stamped at the ricasso is “N.P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1847”.  Stamped on the obverse is “US / S.K”. The blade is clean and semi-bright with a moderate amount of darker spotting. No edge nicks. The leather washer is present.

The brass hilt has two branches and knuckle bow. The front of the quillion is bent forward. The pommel is of the Phrygian helmet style and stamped with inspector’s initials “JWB” and “SK”. All brass has been polished. The ribbed wood grip is visible as much of the leather wrapping is worn away. The double-twist wire wrap is present but broken in the center of the grip and as a result loose.

The steel scabbard is mostly brown in color. There is a single shallow dent near the drag. It has two large iron mounting rings. No inspector’s initials visible. The drag shows some wear on the bottom edge.

An early dated “wrist breaker” showing honest use.    [jet] [ph:L]
