The "Cent Garde" pattern sword has two different guard styles. This example has large circular wreath with an 8 pointed, silver ribbed, star shape center. It has open space between each point. The other style (pictured in this work) has a solid center with no open spaces. The solid center style is pictured in the Schuyler, Hartley & Graham catalog. Both styles have a federal eagle applied to the silver inset. The guard has three branches coming off the knucklebow. The grip is polished horn with fine twisted brass wire. The 37.25 inch straight blade has two fullers running the entire length. The back blade edge or spine appears to be engraved: “Mre Impale de Chatt Mre O.d'Etat Major 1856 Mle 1855”. There are proof marks */S and crown / M and a B inset in a shield. The scabbard is undecorated steel.
