Great early naval surgeon sword. Guard has high grade casting on knucklebow, pommel and has anchor langets. Guard retains a fair amount of the original gilt. Ivory grips are carved and the obverse side has a vertical crack. Blade is gray and has little of the original gold gilt remaining. Obverse side foliate - liberty cap / foliate - liberty cap / foliate - fouled anchor - foliate / foliate - anchor / foliate/ Reverse side anchor / foliate / foliate - union shield / US Eagle with EPU ribbon / foliate - foliate. Scabbard is brass with some original gilt and is hand chased around the mount bands and drag. Center of scabbard is chased with a stand of flags, arms and an anchor. [ph:L]
