This is a very nice example of the regulation, military issue Second Model Maynard cavalry carbine in very good to excellent condition. The barrel has about 100 percent deep blue finish remaining with crisp inspector initials on the left side flat, both sights in place, and an excellent bore. The lower frame, where a soldier would balance the carbine in his left hand, shows a mix of gray and dark gray from handling, but the screw heads show very good blue, the slots are crisp, and the Mass. Arms Company manufacturer’s markings on the right forward frame are sharp. The lever shows nice color and the left side shows sharp Maynard patent markings, nice blue to the ends of the screws, and also some light case color at midpoint, just forward of the sling bar. The wood has great color, surface, a tight fit to the metal, and two very sharp inspector cartouches on the left wrist. We see only some scattered light handling marks on the top the stock near the buttplate and a couple of small pressure dot on the right and a couple of light dings or scratches on the left.

This is the standard configuration Second Model, manufactured without patch box or forestock, fitted with a 20-inch .50 caliber barrel that tips up at the breech for insertion of a brass-cased cartridge made with a flame-hole at bottom to be ignited by a percussion cap. Some 20,000 of this wartime production model, made under government contract, began arriving in the field in 1864 and it was generally regarded as light and effective. Units known to have carried it included the 6th and 11th Indiana and 10th and 12th Tennessee Cavalry, as well as cavalry serving against Indian tribes in New Mexico, Utah and the Dakota Territory.

This is key U.S. Civil War cavalry carbine in any collection and this is a great example. [sr] [ph:L]
