Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2022-377

Carbine was produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island. This cavalry model .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine is in good serviceable condition. This weapon employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cartridge. Carbine also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch of the trigger guard is activated which allows for quick insertion of the cartridge.

All metal surfaces on this carbine have a plumb brown appearance. No original finish remains.

Barrel has original front and rear sight and is held to the forearm by a single iron band. There is a slightly worn “CAST STEEL 186?” mark forward of the rear sight. Bore is clean and excellent.

Breechblock and frame have a matching serial number of 28871. This area also has a good stamping of “BURNSIDE PATENT MARCH 25TH 1856.” The right side of the receiver has a single guide screw which allows for smooth operation of the breech.

Lock plate is marked with a strong “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.” Mechanics are smooth and work properly. Original nipple is present and in good condition. Numerous sub-inspector marks are visible on major components.

Black walnut stock is in good, original condition with two good cartouche marks on the left wrist area. Stock exhibits a number of shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age. Some original feathering is still visible on the butt. Stock is free of cracks, however there is a 2.25 inch old scratch on the right side of the butt.

Carbine is fitted with a sling bar and ring. Sling swivel is present at bottom of butt.

Very nice example.  [ad][ph:L]
