Offered here is a rare .58 caliber Spillman cartridge.  This Confederate cartridge was manufactured at the Lynchburg Ordnance Depot.  John Spillman of Warrenton received Confederate States patent #27 on October 2, 1861 for a “Device for Making Cartridges.”  Spillman’s cartridges are interesting because the nose of the bullet is left exposed.  The cartridge paper was doubled over a stiff paper ring that sits atop the bullet. The cartridge was filled with powder and the end closed by folds.

The cartridge contains a nose cast, 3-groove minie ball. Paper is soiled and there is one small repair but this remains perfectly displayable and is one of the hardest Confederate cartridges to acquire.  [jet]
