This is a nice piece to accompany a cavalryman’s .54 Caliber Burnside carbine. This has the characteristic ball top, pointed tip and cruciform slotted body of the Burnside tompions. They are occasionally seen in photos, but were a common item of issue to help keep carbine barrel dry and clean.
This would add to a display of cavalry arms or a collection focussing on a unit armed with one of the several patterns of Burnside. Exc. condition. [sr] [ph:m]
