This sheet brass muzzle cover also serves to protect the front sight of the rifle. It is spring-loaded and slides over the muzzle to clamp behind the sight block and is opened by applying pressure at the top front and slid forward. According to Dorsey, some 134,000 were made in fiscal year 1900, but they are now fairly scarce. The Krag was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1892, replacing the old .45-70 trapdoor, and production started in 1894. With about 500,000 made up to 1904, it was used in many of the “little wars” fought by the U.S., including the Spanish-American War, until replaced by the M1903 Springfield. This is a key U.S. Army gun tool to complement a Krag display. Excellent condition, just showing some appropriate age. [sr] [ph:m]
